Senior Health Tip : Good Shoes Can Prevent Falls

(HealthDay News) — The shoes you wear can play a big part in how steady you are on your feet, which is a big concern for many seniors.

Here are guidelines for choosing safe shoes, and other ways to help reduce the risk of falls, courtesy of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons :

  • Make sure your shoes fit correctly. Always measure your feet before you buy new footwear.
  • Choose shoes that are comfortable and sturdy, avoiding those with very thick soles or high heels.
  • Look for shoes with soles that won’t skid or slip.
  • Keep laces tied tightly all the times. If you have trouble tying laces, look for shoes with Velcro.
  • Always wear well-fitted, non-skid slippers at home. Throw away slippers that have become too stretched. Avoid walking barefoot or in your socks.
  • Don’t let your toenails get too long.

Did you know that falling is the #1 cause of injuries, both fatal and non-fatal, in Americans over the age of 65? Falls are obviously not a terminal disease-they are completely preventable. Here are some tips to help keep your loved one safe :

Get Mom or Dad moving! Exercise is the best way to reduce falls in seniors. Taking part in an exercise like Tai Chi builds muscle strength and will make your loved one feel better. Seniors who regularly exercise are less likely to fall and if they do fall, their injuries are usually not as serious as those who do not exercise.

Organize your loved one’s living space (and make it safer at the same time). Enlist the help of your home health care provider. Make sure there are no obstacles, like shoes or trash cans, stored in or near walkways. Store items used frequently in cabinets and drawers that are easily accessible.

Consult with your family member’s health care provider regarding their current medications. Some medications can cause side effects like drowsiness which can contribute to a higher risk of a fall.

Make a trip to the eye doctor. Poor vision can be a huge contributing factor in falls. You may find that you need a new prescription, or have a condition like glaucoma that is affecting your vision.
With little effort, you will be able to make sure your loved one doesn’t have to experience the pain and injuries that can come with a fall.
